Episode Context
Every day presents us with countless decisions. Some seem insignificant, while others can influence the direction of our lives. In each of those moments, something is shaping how we respond—our emotions, desires, fears, circumstances, the opinions of others, or the wisdom and direction of God.
For followers of Christ, the goal is to increasingly learn what it means to live under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Galatians 5:25 says, “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” (NIV) The phrase “keep in step” provides a powerful picture of the Christian life. We aren’t called to run ahead of God or drift behind Him. We are invited to walk closely with Him, following His direction one step at a time.
The Holy Spirit isn’t merely a feeling, influence, or impersonal spiritual force. He is the third Person of the Trinity—fully God and personally involved in the lives of believers. Jesus promised His followers that the Holy Spirit would teach, guide, comfort, and empower them.
Living a Spirit-led life begins with surrender.
Romans 8:14 says, “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.” (NIV) Being led by the Spirit isn’t reserved for pastors, missionaries, or exceptionally mature Christians. The Holy Spirit is given to every believer, helping us faithfully follow Christ.
One of the primary ways the Holy Spirit leads us is through God’s Word. Because the Spirit inspired Scripture, His guidance will never contradict what God has already revealed. The more familiar we become with biblical truth, the better equipped we are to recognize decisions and attitudes that align with God’s character.
The Holy Spirit also brings conviction. Conviction is different from condemnation. Condemnation leaves us believing we are hopeless and beyond restoration. Conviction identifies where we have wandered and calls us back toward God. The Spirit may prompt us to confess sin, seek forgiveness, repair a relationship, resist temptation, or choose obedience when compromise would be easier.
He also develops wisdom within us. God doesn’t always provide a detailed roadmap for every decision. Instead, as Scripture renews our minds and the Spirit shapes our character, we begin asking better questions. Rather than simply asking, “What do I want?” we increasingly ask, “What choice would most honor God?”
Following the Spirit also requires sensitivity. Constant noise, distractions, and busyness can make it difficult to recognize what God is teaching us. Regular time in prayer and Scripture gives us opportunities to quiet our hearts and allow God’s truth to shape our thinking.
That doesn’t mean the Spirit will always lead us toward what feels easiest. His direction may require forgiveness when resentment feels justified, generosity when we’d prefer to hold tightly, truth when silence would be more comfortable, or courageous obedience when we feel inadequate.
Yet wherever God leads, He provides the strength necessary to faithfully follow.
Ultimately, the evidence of a Spirit-led life is increasing Christlikeness. Our priorities change. Our responses become different. The fruit of the Spirit becomes increasingly visible, and others begin seeing evidence of Jesus through the way we live.
We will still stumble, but God’s grace continually invites us to confess, return, and keep walking with Him.
As you reflect on this episode, consider this question:
Am I reacting according to my own desires and emotions—or responding under the guidance of the Holy Spirit?
Stay rooted in God’s Word. Stand firm in your faith. Live with steadfast fortitude.
