Episode Context

Spiritual maturity can sometimes seem like something certain Christians simply possess. We see someone with deep biblical knowledge, a consistent prayer life, or unwavering trust during difficult circumstances and wonder how they developed such strong faith.

The answer usually isn’t one dramatic spiritual moment. Spiritual strength is developed through daily faithfulness.

Second Peter 3:18 tells believers, “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” (NIV) Peter’s instruction is to grow—not to instantly arrive at spiritual maturity. Following Christ is a lifelong process in which God continually shapes our character, strengthens our faith, and teaches us to become more like Jesus.

One important part of that growth is consistently spending time with God through Scripture and prayer. These practices aren’t simply religious obligations to complete. They are opportunities to deepen our relationship with our Heavenly Father and better understand His character, truth, and will.

But knowledge alone isn’t enough.

James 1:22 says, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” (NIV) Genuine spiritual growth occurs when biblical truth begins changing the way we live. Scripture should influence how we speak, forgive, serve, respond to conflict, handle worry, and love the people around us.

Growth happens when truth becomes action.

Spiritual maturity also develops through relationships with other believers. Christianity was never intended to be practiced entirely alone. We need people who will encourage us, pray with us, challenge us, and remind us of God’s truth when our own perspective becomes clouded.

Growth also requires patience. Like a tree gradually developing deeper roots, spiritual transformation is often difficult to see from one day to the next. Yet over months and years, consistent faithfulness produces noticeable change.

Philippians 1:6 reminds us that “he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” (NIV) Our growth doesn’t depend entirely upon our own strength. God Himself is actively working within us.

That work often includes difficult seasons. Trials can expose where our trust truly rests, develop perseverance, deepen our dependence on God, and strengthen areas of our character that comfort rarely touches.

This is also why comparing our spiritual journey with someone else’s can become discouraging. God is working uniquely in each person’s life. Instead of measuring ourselves against others, we can look for evidence of how Christ is transforming us. Perhaps we’re becoming more patient, quicker to forgive, more consistent in prayer, or increasingly willing to trust God.

And when we stumble, grace allows us to continue. Spiritual maturity isn’t about achieving perfection. It involves confessing our failures, receiving God’s forgiveness, learning from them, and faithfully moving forward.

God often transforms our lives not through giant leaps, but through small acts of obedience repeated faithfully over time.

As you reflect on this episode, consider this question:

What is one area of my spiritual life where God is calling me to take a small but consistent step toward greater maturity?

Stay rooted in God’s Word. Stand firm in your faith. Live with steadfast fortitude.
