Episode Context
The gospel is the foundation upon which the entire Christian faith stands. The word gospel means “good news,” but understanding why the message of Jesus is such good news begins with recognizing the problem facing every person.
Romans 3:23 tells us, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (NIV) Sin is a universal human problem. It goes beyond individual mistakes or poor decisions. At its core, sin represents our rebellion against God and our failure to live according to His perfect standard.
The consequence of that sin is serious. Romans 6:23 explains, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (NIV) Sin separates us from a holy God, and nothing we accomplish through our own effort can repair that separation. Good deeds, religious activity, church attendance, or trying to become a better person cannot erase our sin.
We needed a Savior.
That is where the good news begins.
God did not abandon humanity in its brokenness. Instead, His love moved Him toward us. John 3:16 reveals that God loved the world so much that He gave His one and only Son so that whoever believes in Him can have eternal life.
Jesus Christ lived the perfect life we could never live and willingly went to the cross. There, He took upon Himself the punishment our sin deserved. Romans 5:8 beautifully demonstrates God’s grace: “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (NIV)
God did not wait until we became worthy. Christ came for us while we were still sinners.
But Jesus’ death was not the end. Three days later, He rose from the dead. The resurrection demonstrates Christ’s victory over sin and death and gives believers hope that reaches beyond the circumstances of this life into eternity.
Our response to this incredible gift is repentance and faith. Repentance means turning away from sin and toward God. Faith means placing our trust in Jesus and what He accomplished rather than depending upon our own goodness.
Salvation cannot be earned. It is received by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
And the gospel isn’t something Christians leave behind after coming to faith. It remains the foundation of the Christian life, reminding us that our hope isn’t found in our performance but in Christ’s finished work.
